I love my job.

And that’s an understatement. I find much joy when I am able to help others free themselves from their limiting beliefs, gain clarity, achieve their biggest goals and become their own #bestmeever. It’s also a plus that I get to work wherever I please, may it be at the beach or in a quaint abode amidst lush greenery, because I can coach virtually. Yes, being a professional life coach makes my heart (and my pocket too, candidly speaking) full. And because of this rewarding profession, time and again, I’ve been asked by a lot of people what is needed to pursue a career in professional life coaching.

So allow me to share with you the 5 things to consider if you want to become a professional life coach someday.

Consider the state of your mind and heart

Being a life coach is more than just a profession; it’s a calling per se. You must be willing to open your mind and stretch your heart fully to be able to connect with your clients beautifully. Ask yourself this: “Why do I really want to be a professional life coach?” Always check on your answer because that will help you stay committed to your journey even when it gets tough along the way.

Consider the best coaching institutions that can certify you

Do diligent research about the coaching institution you want to be certified from. Check on the institution’s program and coaching methodology if they’re in alignment with your own vision and research on the post-certification benefits/support that your institution will give you. It’s also best to check on the quality of their graduates and the integrity and credibility of the coaching faculty because at the end of the day, having a certification from a highly reputable coaching institution is one thing; seeing the results and the true value they give thereafter is another.

Consider getting an awesome mentor coach

Let’s face it: a few days of the certification process won’t allow you to fully grow your own coaching muscles. Best to reach out to a professional coach whom you truly resonate with in terms of the results he/she has achieved. Check on the person’s coaching credentials, global affiliations, track record of successful coachees, and don’t be afraid to schedule a chemistry session with that person to experience being coached and see if there’s a fit, in terms of work ethics, core values and skills set. Admittedly, getting a mentor coach can be quite pricey but remember, you pray premium for quality and at the end of the day, coaching mishaps are far more expensive so choose to invest wisely.

Consider joining a reputable coaching organization

If you want to build your network and enjoy the free valuable resources and talks for the members, then you might want to accredit yourself with reputable global coaching organizations such as the International Coach Federation, Association for Coaching, International Association of Coaching, among others. Since these organisations have their own screening process and ranking up entails proof of successfully adhering to the highest coaching standards, being part of one gives you more credibility worldwide as a professional coach.

Consider being part of an online coaching family

Embarking on your journey towards being a professional life coach can be quite scary and intimidating at times. So allow yourself to find a group of like-minded and like-hearted people who will genuinely support you in your personal and professional journey. It’s important to check on the organization’s culture and the people behind it. The Global Coaching Circle on Facebook is a dynamic group composed of multi-disciplinary coaches and change-makers who want to create a safe, loving space that’s inclusive and genuinely happy. Anchored on core values that are in alignment with authenticity, integrity, and excellence, the Global Coaching Circle aims to foster growth and camaraderie amongst its members while providing valuable resources and inspiration along the way.

I hope these will help you to finally pursue your dreams of becoming a professional life coach. Know that I am with you in your journey.
